The Mission Viejo Diablos had a great showing at CIF-SS Division I Swimming & Diving Championships last week. The Diablos finished tied for 23rd out of 48 teams.
Katie Wallace advanced to state qualifying on Saturday morning. She was diving well but hit the board pretty hard in the 4th round, needing medical attention. The trainer did an excellent job getting her bandaged in time for the 5th round, and Katie completed the competition. However, when a diver hits the board, the judges can only give a maximum award of 2. Katie competed valiantly but was unable to overcome the consequences of that 4th round dive. She finished 11th. Only the top 6 advanced to state competition.
Saturday evening, Carsyn Covarrubias, Brianna Daniel, Hanna Erickson, and Jacky Setlich competed in the swimming finals. All swims earned CIF State consideration qualifying times. Erickson finished 17th in the 200 IM and 11th in the 100 fly. The 200 free relay team of Daniel, Covarrubias, Erickson and Setlich finished 17th. In prelims, this relay earned the 7th fastest time in MVHS history with a time of 1:39.32.
Erickson is third alternate in the 200 IM and second alternate in the 100 fly. The 200 free relay is 13th alternate for advancing to state. Teams have until 10:00 a.m. Tuesday to scratch, so the state qualifier list isn’t official until after that. It is possible that we may have girls get into the state meet and will know Tuesday afternoon.
